Parenting without Punishment

About Parenting without Punishment

A compelling story of American parenting, marriage, and education from a father dedicated to political equality and the equality of gender and generations. Never a manual - always the narration of a personal journey to get the most important things right.~Sherry Turkle, MIT Professor. Parenting without Punishment is a partisan argument on behalf of democratizing childrearing. Greer argues that zero-punishment parenting is a more humane and effective approach for raising children to become self-disciplined, morally decent, creative and responsible citizens. He builds the case based on his own family experiences as a child and a parent and his studies of historical theories of childrearing and contemporary studies of child development. Ed Greer graduated from Columbia College, Yale Law School and the Harvard School of Public Health. He was a political activist in the civil rights, feminist, and anti-war movements. He worked as an aide to the first Black mayor, taught history, politics and law in college and law school settings and was a civil litigator specializing in toxic torts and civil rights and liberties. He has written books about urban politics and toxic torts. He and his wife, a biomedical researcher and professor at Harvard Medical School, raised two children who are married and creative scientists on medical school faculties.
