Ace fighter pilot Smilin' Jack Rawlins has managed to survive the Vietnam War both physically and emotionally. Back home, however, his fortunes start fading fast when he signs on with VVAPS, an aerospace manufacturer whose bureaucratic excess stands second only to that of the US government.
