Phytochemical evaluation and determination of biological activities

About Phytochemical evaluation and determination of biological activities

The objective of this study was the phytochemical evaluation of the extracts of apple tree leaves "Malus pumila", as well as the exploration of their antiradical and antimicrobial activities. The phytochemical screening revealed the presence of tannins, flavonoids and polyphenols in the extracts prepared in the following solvents (chloroform, petroleum ether and ethyl acetate). The results of the quantitative determinations of polyphenols, total flavonoids and tannins show that all the extracts are rich in these active principles. Regarding the antioxidant activity, all extracts reveal important antiradical activities against the DPPH radical and a powerful reducing power (FRAP). Inhibitory effects on the growth of most of the tested bacterial strains (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis), were also mentioned, for all the extracts of Malus pumila. This confers to this plant beneficial potentialities that can be explored in vivo at the level of some physiological functions.
