This book presents the managed aquifer recharge, also called MAR, as state of the art in the Middle East and North Africa. Renewable groundwater resources are scarce in the majority of the MENA countries. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) area is often regarded as the world's most water-scarce region. The MENA region consists of eighteen countries covering an area of approximately 12 million km2. The population of MENA countries is around 6% of the world's population, but its water resources are four times lower. Aquifer recharge plays an essential role in adequately allocating recovered water into the groundwater storage capacity, recovering overexploited groundwater, and improving groundwater quality. MAR may help minimize flood mitigation and flood hazard by harvesting floodwater using storage dams, which allows it to replenish the underlying groundwater aquifer while simultaneously lowering flood risks to downstream areas. MAR has the potential to be a crucial water management strategy to promote groundwater storage in arid and semiarid regions as MENA region. This book explores several themes, including the status of the applications of the MAR in MENA countries, strategies for the MAR in MENA countries, MAR methods and assessments, the economics of using MAR in the MENA region, sustainability of the MAR in MENA countries, environmental risk management, and relevant applications of remote sensing and GIS techniques for the managed aquifer recharge. This book presents various strategies for the managed aquifer recharge in the MENA countries to help them achieve their sustainability agenda 2030.

This book addresses critical questions in the field of terrorism studies that have long eluded consensus in the international community. It discusses why there is an abundance of definitions of terrorism and, on the other hand, the absence of a standard definition of terrorism reflected at the international level, shedding light on the elusive boundaries for achieving a global consensus. The book's two compelling hypotheses pave the way for a fresh perspective on counterterrorism efforts. Firstly, the need for new legal frameworks that adapt to the evolving nature of terrorism, encompassing state-sponsored terrorism. Secondly, by examining the historical roots of terrorism, this book uncovers patterns that could reshape future counterterrorism strategies.Drawing on interviews with 20 leading experts in terrorism studies from diverse backgrounds and regions, this book provides invaluable insights and ensures a well-rounded examination of the subject. It will appeal to students, scholars, and researchers of security studies, political science, international relations, and terrorism studies in particular, as well as policy-makers interested in exploring the complexities of countering terrorism in our ever-changing world.
This book discusses theories of crisis management and the radical right, to shed light on how responses to crisis influence radical right parties in their presence, discourse, and evolution. The book offers a comparative perspective by examining case studies with various traditions of radical right actors, presenting data on how crisis exploitation can assist in exploring, reconsidering, bargaining, and learning about the prospects of change of political parties. The book focuses on the debate on radicalization and crisis management. Similar to the already existing economic, political, post-Brexit, and migration crises in Europe, discourses of fear around the latest health crisis are paving the way for further radicalised discourse from the far right. The book looks into how radical right parties in Europe have responded to these crises. It monitors and explores how crisis exploitation impacts political strategies, opportunity-seeking behaviours, and the evolution of the discourse of radical right parties in the contemporary political landscape. Therefore, this book is a must-read for researchers, students, and policy-makers, interested in a better understanding of populism, radical right parties, electoral studies, as well as comparative politics in general.

Strategic agility is a fast-growing paradigm for strategic thinking and strategy-making that is finding increasing acceptance both in academia and practice. But what are the theoretical origins of this paradigm? What are the main lines of development of the paradigm in the current academic debate and in firms adopting agile strategies? And, finally, what are the areas and topics that need additional research? With this book, Guido Bortoluzzi and Marco Balzano take us first into the past to look for the historical roots of this disruptive paradigm, then review the current academic debate on the topic and present some cases of agile companies. And finally, they discuss the potential future development of this topic in the field of strategy research.

By adopting a uniform analytical framework, each case study discusses how armed forces view defense AI; how they are developing AI-enhanced solutions, adapting existing structures and processes, and funding their defense AI endeavors; to what extent defense AI is already fielded and operated; and how soldiers and officers are being trained to work with AI.
Experimental psychology depends on theoretical and methodological foundations. Addressing these foundations is not always trivial and requires a shift in the epistemological perspective. Phenomenology can provide a framework that helps to discuss the possibilities and challenges of the discipline. This book provides a historical overview of the phenomenological movement as well as a systematic introduction to the research approaches that are known as 'phenomenological psychology'. The central claim is that the phenomenological discourse can increase the conceptual, descriptive, and methodological rigor in psychology. The purpose of the book is to facilitate the dialogue between phenomenology and cognitive sciences. It is meant to be a guide for interested scholars but also offers new ideas for experts in the field.
This book unpacks key concepts and methods that are relevant for a critical and reflective framing of futures in postdigital education. The rich and often confusing terminology in the multidisciplinary field of digitalization and education tends to prevent conversations across disciplines and areas about core issues at stake in increasingly data-driven everyday practices, such as issues of ethics and values. The compiled chapters focus on concepts and methods that have pertinence for contemporary debates about the emergence of data-driven education. The chapters explore their implicit or explicit ethical and normative implications. The chapters provide in-depth critical reflections and perspectives for scholars in the field to engage and analyze data-driven education as an educational and cultural phenomenon. This anthology thus focuses on the value-laden and ethical aspects reflected in educational imaginaries (discourses and practices) regarding emerging data-driven sociotechnical practices in education. Claims about data-driven practices contributing to ensuring the quality and value of the learning experience raise a series of questions that warrant ethical considerations. Concerns have arisen in connection with inequalities, discrimination, algorithmic authority, accountability, and student well-being, as well as advisors' moral discomfort and violation of a professional, ethical code. This includes conceptual perspectives of marginalized and minoritized groups and issues closely related to intersectionality. Furthermore, questions of Bildung are re-articulated and manifested anew through evolving digital solutions, calling for critical perspectives on reproduction, transformation, and innovation in education. In this context, we argue that educational sciences need to pay attention to the values and the ethics associated with emerging sociotechnical imaginaries. The book is the result of scholarly exchanges between disciplines at a symposium held at VIA University College in Denmark in May 2022. Contributors have singled out concepts and methods for an in-depth discussion on their meaning with regards to the overall theme.

This open access book analyzes how sound choices can be made in Dutch health care policies, and shows why they are necessary, urgent, and even inevitable. Analyzing the current functioning and funding of the Dutch health care system, this book shows how three dimensions of sustainability - financial, staffing and societal - are under increasing pressure. This study explores priority setting in health care and calls for well-informed, clear and sometimes uncompromising choices in the allocation of means and personnel. This is necessary in order to maintain accessible and high-quality care for all, and to improve public health. Making balanced choices in health care is of particular importance to vulnerable groups whose voices may not be heard as readily or effectively in the public debate, and whose interests are more easily crowded out. Prioritizing in the domain of public health care is first and foremost a political responsibility, but also one for health care providers across the system and ultimately also for citizens. While this work focuses on the Netherlands, similar processes are at play across the developed economies, making it broadly relevant to policy makers, health care professionals and health care (policy) researchers grappling with the questions surrounding the sustainability of public health care.

This book presents the economic heartbeat and institutional details that shaped Athenian society during the Classical period (508-323 BCE), employing an innovative and outside-the-box approach to studying history. It answers questions about societal structure, the roles of women, foreigners, and slaves, the transformation of their economy from agrarian to maritime, and commercially-oriented. 28 short fictional stories enliven the narrative, each accompanied by rigorous academic analysis - revealing how banking, insurance, and the Athenian drachma, the internationally accepted currency of the times, shaped their world.Exploring the symbiotic relationship between democracy and economic evolution, the book examines the sophisticated economic institutions of ancient Athens -ranging from property rights protection to market-driven price determination, anti-profiteering measures, measures to protect the Athenian currency¿s trustworthiness from forgery, business and labor mentality and practices, international trade patterns, as well as the existence of a robust public sector related also to the provision of a series of public goods. In a comprehensive analysis, the book scrutinizes daily life, societal structures, and customs, addressing a variety of questions such as marriage, cuisine, attire, values, and entertainment.Employing New Institutional Economics as a methodology, the book puts together historical evidence with institutional analysis, offering an interdisciplinary lens through economics, political science, strategy, and behavioral theory. Richly supported by ancient sources, inscriptions, and a vast modern bibliography, this work not only explains ancient Athens but also proposes its socioeconomic pattern as a guide for modern societal challenges in economic governance and democracy.
