Sarah West, a charismatic five year-old child seems to be predisposed to a higher purpose. After exhibiting unusual behavior she suffers a strange and untimely death. Dennis Smith, an intelligent New England college student is striving to make his mark during tumultuous times. His competitive, wealthy upbringing coupled with a deep-seated desire for conquest leads him to Damascus, Syria for a summer break. There, his intelligence and desire to succeed meet with the approval of his host, Ali Hassan. While working and living with Hassan, Dennis eventually adopts his host's anti-American views.
Steven Severn, a bored under-achieving research scientist, and son of a prominent Portland, Oregon physician is pulled into a classified government project to investigate the biological threat coming out of the Middle East. His employer, Chemcon Industries, has been approached to create a vaccine for a biological agent smuggled out of Syria. His everyday life gets turned upside down as he struggles with the classified nature of his new assignment.
