Hearing is a prerequisite for the evolution of language and thus the development of human societies. How hearing-related sensory epithelia in the ear evolved is an example of evolutionary developmental neuroplasticity which remains largely unexplored. This monograph explores insights into this process from the molecular to the behavioral levels.
