This book is a light-hearted (yet serious) study of the mess that is English spelling. It reviews the history of English spelling and the failed attempts to fix it. It also deals with the problem of getting foreign words into English. It surveys the work of Samuel Johnson and Noah Webster and the tremendous effect that computer searches have had on the study of spelling and grammar.
