Joe Peters arrives for baseball try-outs, feeling nervous but ready to show his skills. He impresses the coaches and earns a spot on the city best team but Jeff Brownlow, a talented, arrogant player from a rival team seems intent on causing trouble. An intense rivalry forms between them. Jeff asks Mary out on a date, seeking to get between her and Joe. Mary agrees, causing jealousy and confusion for Joe. Distracted by Jeff and Mary budding romance, Joe performance declines. He considers quitting baseball entirely.
