Hopkins's letters are his secular confessional and if we wish to understand the man and his poetry, they cannot be ignored. For this edition the letters have been re-transcribed from their original manuscripts, they are presented in chronological order with all deletions and corrections included, and are accompanied by scrupulous annotation.
