The Little Spirit Doll

About The Little Spirit Doll

This is a wonderful fun story about healing from trauma written and illustrated by Cree metis artist Shelley Rose May (Metis Mama Art). Inspired by her own story as a second generation residential school survivor, Shelley wants to help children and families to heal from intergenerational trauma through this story. The little spirit dolls exhibit signs of trauma such as fear, anger and sadness and have fun adventures together to help them to heal. The little spirit doll is made with clay and wood. The clay was taken without ceremony from her river bank home so the little spirit doll feels traumatized from being ripped from her home and feels that she has no name and noone who loves her. She goes on a journey to heal and with the help of friends and spirit guides, she finds her way. This 40 page book contains illustrations that are gradually coloured in as the doll heals. It is a great way to teach children about trauma and healing. It also includes a foreword and a Creation Story by Cree elder John Sinclair. This children's book is recommended for ages 7-10.
