Seventeen-year-old Ed Tice is a gifted church speaker in Wayne County Tennessee. So gifted the churches pay his way to a school in Memphis so he can become a full-fledged preacher. He takes housing with one of the professors and falls in love with the man's daughter, Elizabeth, who finds out Ed has a drinking problem. When he won't comply with her wishes, she goes to her father. Banished from school, losing the love of his life and too ashamed to go home, Ed takes up odd jobs here and there until he lands in Arkansas where he's hired to work in a hardware store. The store owner, Mr. Carr, is a staunch Christian and after hearing Ed's story he wants to help him with his problem. Carr insists Ed speak at his church, hoping this will start him back on the right path.When Ed discovers a number of people he knows live in Big Flat, Arkansas, he realizes to become the Godly man he wants to be, he has to pay back the churches for his failed education and move to Big Flat. His main goal is to convert bootlegger Willy Sitton to Christianity. In the process of facing off with Willy, Ed tries, though still fighting his own demon's, to win Elizabeth's heart back. Will he earn the love and trust of the woman who holds his heart, overcome his craving of the devil's brew, succeed with saving Willy and live happily ever after?
