The author has been unusually successful in portraying the relation between Aunt Betsey and the little boy, John; and Uncle Alford's tales of Brer Mole, Brer Rabbit, Brer Crickit, and many others have been considered by some readers to excel Uncle Remus. Humor pervades the book.
