Sergeant Rashford of the Northwest Mounted Police once let a man get away after following the so-called Claude Dallas's traces across the newly created country of Alsama, formerly the prairie provinces of Canada.

He's moved to new pastures in southern Saskatchewan and has done his best to put "Claude Dallas" out of his mind. He has other mysteries to ponder, including the woman who took him for dinner and a bus fare but whom he can't get out of his mind.

When the two tracks cross, he is surprised--but determined that this time neither Roxanne nor "Claude Dallas" will get the better of him.
