Anthony Hope was the nom de plume of Sir Anthony Hope Hawkins (1863-1933), a British novelist most famous for his his romantic adventure The Prisoner of Zenda (1894), which was set in the fictional kingdom of Ruritania. He practised as a lawyer until 1894, when he started writing full time after Zenda's success. He completing many other novels and plays, including Rupert of Hentzau, Sophy of Kravonia, and Tristram of Blent. He was knighted in recognition of his contribution to British propaganda efforts during World War I.
