¿After decades of marriage, motherhood, and grandmotherhood, Cat Caliban has become Cincinnati's newest, oldest, funniest detective-in-training. Since no case is too insignificant, Cat takes on a lost kitten challenge for the neighborhood's preeminent teen entrepreneur. But that leads to a more prominent case: who murdered local high school basketball hero Julius "Juky" Kay, star forward of the Oscar Robertson Rattlesnakes?

Long experience with sulky, secretive teenagers gives Cat a leg up in the investigation, but she is a leg down after a basketball hoop newly installed at the Catatonia Arms leads to her first sports injury. Soon Cat is crutch-deep in corruption, but that doesn't prevent her from attending the high school prom with retired cop and tenant Moses Fogg to observe the behavior of Juky's teammates after she's banned by their coach. And he's not the only one trying to stop her investigations. Cat is now in the killer's crosshairs, and he doesn't play fair.
