This is the book that allowed me to understand what mindfulness and meditation practices are all about. Instead of tuning out, open yourself up to that one thing you can focus on and appreciate it for what it is whether it's the sound of your breath or a drive in the country. Very practical advice. My stress has gone down considerably since working mindfulness into my life although I understand it is a lifelong practice.

This book is an of exploration of mind that shows the compatibility and resonance of Buddhist philosophy and mindfulness meditation with evolutionary psychology. The author delves into Buddhist views and insights about what is reality and suffering and understanding their impacts on our existence. Then at every turn, Robert Wright shows us the Darwinian drivers like natural selection that have lead to our amazing, millenia old abilities to contemplate human consciousness with its powerful feelings and thoughts. This all ties in with the so-called modular brain described by many modern psychologists which also fits nicely with Buddhist philosophy.

This book changed my life when I first read it in 2009. I was depressed and negative from some difficult life events and stuck that way, losing all sense of self. Reading this was hard work. I focused on everything very hard, took notes, self-reflected, and was determined to practice compassion and understanding. I payed attention to my thought patterns and weeded out the negative thoughts and changed them to positive ones. I have always had a temper so when I feel myself giving into it, I read the chapter on anger and find my control again. It's amazing and I'd recommend it to anyone who is willing to dedicate themselves to change and read it with an open mind. Anyone from any religion can use and appreciate it, including atheists. It's a way of living every day.

Got this book to see if Buddhism is worth pursuing. I am so intrigued by this lifestyle. This book helped me learn that Buddhism is way more than yoga and meditating on my chakras. I am confident I am on the right path after reading this book. Easy reading and eye opening.

Fantastic Book. As a neurologist, I have spent the past three years studying and understanding many mindfulness and acceptance techniques that have their foundation in Buddhism and have been clinically proven to have pervasive health benefits. Principles of Secular Buddhism can be applied by anyone, regardless of religious belief.
