Herman Rosenfeld wakes up in an alternate 1997 where the Fascist powers won World War II. The United States still exists, but has not been immune to the cultural contagion of intolerance and hatred the Fascist states have spread. Herman works to figure out the point where his new world diverged from his old one. He realizes he knows who caused this divergence and with his alternate world grandson, Josh, he sets off for Rome, the capital of the Fascist New Roman Empire, to find the man responsible, Vito Armini. Through his quest to find a way home, Herman grows to love his new grandson and witnesses the tragedy that one man's power-seeking has wrought upon the world.
