Deer of the Dawn

In this fantasy story, Mara looks like whitetail deer that are found in many places in the United States. White bucks and white deer are very rare. They are born with almost no pigment, something that causes color in their skin and fur. What parts of the story seem real? What parts seem like make-believe?
