Growing Black Sapote

The chocolate pudding fruit, or black sapote, is a tropical fruit that originally hails from Central America and Mexico. Diospyros texana is the official scientific name of this tree. The fruit's moniker comes from the fact that its ripe, dark, custard-like flesh tastes and feels just like chocolate pudding.
The Black Sapote ripens when its skin reaches a deep brown or nearly black color and its meat turns tender and flavorful. The fruit has a chocolate flavor without the guilt of real chocolate pudding thanks to its reduced calorie and fat content. Some people use it in smoothies, desserts, or even recipes calling for chocolate, but most people just eat it straight from the fruit.
