Growing Dieffenbachia

The tropical flowering plant genus Dieffenbachia, originally from Central and South America, goes by the names "dumbcane" and "dumb cane." The name "Dieffenbachia" is a tribute to the German botanist Ernst Dieffenbach.
Because of their beautiful foliage--which can be variegated with many shades of green, white, and yellow--these plants are popular as decorative houseplants.
Keep in mind that the calcium oxalate crystals found in Dieffenbachia plants can lead to swelling and discomfort if consumed. Consequently, you should keep them away from pets and young children because they are harmful.
The common term "dumb cane" is derived from the poisonous sap of the plant, which, if swallowed, can temporarily paralyze the mouth or cause a temporary loss of speech. You should be very careful while handling these plants and make sure to wash your hands well after handling them to prevent skin irritation.
