The journal Biomaterials was launched in 1980. The subject of biomaterials science was then in its infancy, being largely cofined to the study of the characteristics of materials used for medical devices.Twenty-five years on, we can truly say that biomaterials science has matured at an incredible rate and now represents a formidable sector that bridges the materials sciences, advanced medical therapies, and molecular and cell sciences. This Silver Jubilee Compendium consists of reprinted versions of the top 25 papers, published during these 25 years, as judged by an international panel of biomaterials scientists. This book is published as a landmark in biomaterials science and it is to be hoped that it will serve as a stimulus to young biomaterials scientists of the early twenty-first century for their pioneering work of the future.
Eye-movement recording has become the method of choice in a wide variety of disciplines investigating how the mind and brain work. This volume presents an overview of eye-movement research. It includes coverage of the history of eye-movement research, physiological and clinical studies of eye movements and transsaccadic integration.
Assembled from selected papers presented during the International Conference on Isotopes in Environmental Studies Aquatic Forum 2004, this book reviews the advancements in isotopic methods for better understanding of key processes in the aquatic environment, responsible for its future development and its protection.
Contains the proceedings of ADHS'06: the 2nd IFAC Conference on Analysis and Design of Hybrid Systems, organized in Alghero (Italy) on June 7-9, 2006. This title includes 65 papers selected through careful reviewing process. It features plenary lectures presented by three distinguished speakers.
Covers the mechanisms of adhesion, its application, and drying and curing techniques. This volume is divided in to the following sections: theory of adhesion; metering and dispensing; design and calculation of bonded joints; heat stable adhesives; UV curing; and, flexible bonding and sealants.
Describes the mechanical behaviour of complex bodies that gives rise to a variety of problems from the macroscopic- to the nano-world. This book explores various aspects of these problems. It is intended for students working on the basic mathematical and physical problems accruing from the mechanics of materials.
Explores pattern recognition technology, and its concomitant role in extracting useful knowledge to build technical and business models directly from data, and in optimizing the results derived from these models within the context of delivering competitive industrial advantage.
Reinforced concrete is one of the most widely used modern materials of construction. This book provides a resource covering various aspects of this material, including both serviceability and durability aspects, along with the information needed maximise the life of buildings constructed from it.
Critical distance methods are extremely useful for predicting fracture and fatigue in engineering components. They also represent an important development in the theory of fracture mechanics. This book shows examples of how critical distance approaches can be applied to predict fracture and fatigue in different classes of materials.
Offers information on the application of fluorine chemistry to energy conversion materials for lithium batteries, fuel cells, solar cells and so on. This book focuses on batteries with high performance, the improvements of cell performance and the improvement of electrode and cell characteristics.
Addresses the problems of maintaining human comfort, activity and health in stressful environments. This book covers subjects such as thermal environments, illumination, noise and hypo- and hyperbaric environments. It contains papers selected from the 10th International Conference on Environmental Ergonomics held in Japan 23-27 September 2002.
Focuses on the role of phytochemistry in the developments in biology brought about by the application of large-scale genomics approaches. This title discusses several functional genomic approaches. It is of interest to scientists, students and individuals interested in developments in the biochemistry, chemistry and molecular biology of plants.
Provides review of the chemistry of hyaluronan, and the role it plays in human biology and pathology. This book presents a sequence leading from the chemistry and biochemistry of hyaluronan, followed by its role in various pathological conditions, to modified hylauronans as potential therapeutic agents.
Provides guidance on the appropriate techniques of local chemical analysis at the local level, down to the atomic scale. This book makes comparisons between various techniques in terms of the nature of the probe employed, and includes a table of acronyms.
The tenth conference on The Mathematics of Finite Elements and Applications, MAFELAP 1999, was held at Brunel University during the period 22-25 June, 1999. This book seeks to highlight certain aspects of the state-of-the-art theory and applications of finite element methods of that time. This latest conference, in the MAFELAP series, followed the well established MAFELAP pattern of bringing together mathematicians, engineers and others interested in the field to discuss finite element techniques. In the MAFELAP context finite elements have always been interpreted in a broad and inclusive manner, including techniques such as finite difference, finite volume and boundary element methods as well as actual finite element methods. Twenty-six papers were carefully selected for this book out of the 180 presentations made at the conference, and all of these reflect this style and approach to finite elements. The increasing importance of modelling, in addition to numerical discretization, error estimation and adaptivity was also studied in MAFELAP 1999.
