Caran and Tevan find the dusty remains of a macabre crime scene. Who committed the gruesome murder, and who was the unlucky traveler? As they search for answers the brothers discover secrets that bear upon their own lives. With mortal danger quick on their heels they're uprooted from their home, driven from their family, set on a perilous journey across a land they hardly know. Forced to contend with malicious mystics, they can't predict if the powers of the mages are a refuge to run to or another evil to be avoided. In a world of poorly understood factions, intrigues, dangers, and powers - magical and spiritual - how can two ordinary boys survive against such extraordinary circumstances?
